With Game of Thrones wrapping up its eighth and final season in a few weeks talk is beginning to turn to future plans for the franchise. HBO has openly been working on a number of different projects in the world of Westeros. Engaging with original writer George R. R. Martin on many of them.
One project which is no longer going is ahead is by long-time Thrones writer Bryan Cogman.
“I’m definitely leaving. I was developing one of the successor shows with [series creator George R.R. Martin]. George has worked with a bunch of the writers, including Jane, whose show is being done [as a pilot]. My prequel show is not happening and will not happen. HBO decided to go a different way,” Cogman revealed in an interview with THR. “So, it is a goodbye. I am done with Westeros. It’s wonderfully bittersweet. I’ll certainly miss it, but I’m excited to go out on my own and try to be in the captain’s chair of my own projects, armed with everything I’ve learned.”
Game of Thrones stars Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. The series airs on HBO in North America and Sky Atlantic here in the UK.
