Two key pieces of casting for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU have been confirmed overnight. In a new interview with IGN reaffirming the studios dedication to the DC Studios slate, Safran has confirmed both lead actor’s in Tom King’s upcoming Mister Miracle animated series.
Whilst discussing DC’s strong lineup of upcoming animated projects the studio co-chair touched on King’s work on Mister Miracle confirming that The Hunger Games‘ Josh Hutcherson and Speak No Evil’s Mackenzie Davis will be taking on the roles of Scott Free and Big Barda.
“I think that Tom King really learned a lot in his season of co-creating and executive producing Lanterns and he adapted his book Mr. Miracle fully on his own, wrote all eight episodes and I think it’s just dynamite. Josh Hutcherson as Scott Free and Mackenzie Davis as Big Barda. And I just think it’s a book that I’ve always loved and I remember Tom telling us early on that, every convention he goes to, at least a couple people come up to him and say this book saved my life and I love that we got to tell that story over eight episodes. And it’s just a beautiful story…’
As has been laid out by James Gunn in the past, actors who take on roles in animation will also be expected to play those roles in live-action where the characters appear. So this casting marks a key moment for the DCU as it begins to develop its New Gods and Apokolips in preparation for potential confrontation with Darkseid.
The critically acclaimed Mister Miracle 12-issue series first published in August 2017 and ran through November 2018. In the book, Scott Free is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. So great that he escaped Granny Goodness’ gruesome orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to travel across galaxies and set up a new life on Earth with his wife, the former Female Fury known as Big Barda. Using the stage alter ego of Mister Miracle, he has made a career for himself showing off his acrobatic escape techniques. He even caught the attention of the Justice League, which counted him among its ranks. You might say Scott Free has everything…so why isn’t it enough? Mister Miracle has mastered every illusion, achieved every stunt, pulled off every trick-except one. He has never escaped death. Is it even possible? Our hero is going to have to kill himself if he wants to find out.
No premiere date has been set for the eight-episode animated series as yet.
