It’s been an amazing weekend for Marvel Studios and Disney. Avengers: Infinity War has exceeded all box office estimates to become the highest grossing opening weekend of all time both in North America and worldwide! In it’s opening domestic frame the latest Marvel outing was forecast to make anywhere from $230-$250m. With Henry Cavill appearing at CinemaCon to promote Mission Impossible: Fallout talk inevitably turned to Superman. Many of the gathered press asked for an update on Man of Steel 2 and Cavill’s contract with WB. Whilst he refused to make any bold statements on either front he did drop some new information. Director J.J. Abrams was on hand last night for the Paramount Studios panel at CinemaCon. The director discussed his upcoming movie Overlord and it’s connection to the Cloverfield universe. Overlord is directed by Julius Avery and is based on an original idea by The Hunger Games screenwriter Billy Ray and Abrams. In the film, set on the eve of D-Day, a group of American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. Back in December we brought you news that Quentin Tarantino is developing a Star Trek movie. The subject came up last night during Paramount Pictures presentation at CinemaCon. Whilst promoting the new Mission Impossible and several other upcoming projects the studio was asked about the future of the Trek franchise. Whilst Tarantino’s name was not mentioned it was confirmed that not one but TWO Star Trek movies are in development. No further information was given. Last night Patty Jenkins appeared at CinemaCon and dropped some small hints on Wonder Woman 2. The film is due to enter production over the summer in London and other global locations. Jenkins refused to confirm a longstanding rumour that the Cold War will feature heavily in the films storyline. She did however confirm that Diana will return to our screen against the backdrop of the 1980s. James Wan was on hand at CinemaCon last night to screen Aquaman footage for fans. Though the footage was unfinished we get a good idea of what is to be expected. In what is being called an unfinished trailer we get a first-look at the King of Atlantis pulling a submarine out of the water, various deep-sea creatures also appear, and of course lots of underwater shots. Overnight the review embargo for Avengers: Infinity War finally lifted. Now we know what the critics think of Marvel’s latest epic. Does it live up to expectations?
