In a history-making twist, Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Godzilla movie to ever receive an R rating from the MPA. According to various reports, the more intense rating refers to the use of “strong/bloody violence.” With two kaiju now in the middle of a war, we’re not surprised that the film’s violence has been notched up substantially. We are, however, surprised by the bloodied violence which surely relates to Godzilla, right?
As a comparison, Minus One received a PG-13 rating and that has been the case for every Godzilla movie from either Toho or the MonsterVerse. Over his 72 year reign in popular culture, all of Godzilla’s movies have operated within the realm of mild violence and, to an extent, family-friendly entertainment. This R rating alludes to a much darker and more extreme monster movie, and considering what Godzilla will be up agaisnt… We are so ready for it.
Synopsis:
War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Godzilla Minus One was a global phenomenon, earning acclaim from critics and the highest box office of a Japan-produced Godzilla film worldwide. The film went on to win Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards®, becoming the first Asian film to take home the award.
Now part of the TOHO Global family, Anime Limited are joining a worldwide collaboration set to make franchise history, with Godzilla Minus Zero being the first Japan-produced film in the historic franchise to be released near-simultaneously in Japan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and North America. The film’s release in Japan on 3rd November commemorates “Godzilla Day”, celebrating the anniversary of the original film’s release in 1954, before cinema’s biggest kaiju stomps across cities in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and beyond.
