Over the course of the past week there has been plenty of rumours circulating about the future of Doctor Who. We chose not to report on unsubstantiated rumours and have been rewarded today with a small update from recent showrunner Russell T. Davies.
The writer and executive producer of Who has been doing the rounds of promotion for his new series Tip Toe starring Alan Cumming. Over the course of the press tour there has been plenty of questions about Who but Davies has remained coy in being dragged into talk about new castings and future seasons.
But appearing on BBC Radio 2 today with DJ Gary Davies the question came up once again and, after joking that the DJ was the new Doctor, Russell decided to open up just a little bit on when news is coming.
“You will get an announcement. There is a press release lumbering through the BBC which, as you know, is like the Jurassic period and 57 people have to sign off on every single word. I promise you in about a week, two weeks, there will be some sort of press release, and yet I can hear the gears slowing down even as I say that. You know this place!”
It was recently revealed that AMC+ will be the new home of Doctor Who outside the UK. With each season featuring Christopher Ecclestone, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker already set to launch on the service. But what has remained out of the headlines is just what is happening with new episodes, a new Doctor and the previously announced Christmas Special for 2026.
