Legendary Entertainment and Netflix, in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks, have officially announced the start of production of the live-action Gundam movie, the highly anticipated feature adaptation of the globally iconic franchise. Production began this month in Queensland, Australia.

Directed by Jim Mickle (Sweet Tooth; Cold in July), the new film stars Sydney Sweeney (The Housemaid, Euphoria) and Noah Centineo (Street Fighter, Warfare). The expansive cast also includes Jackson White (Tell Me Lies), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine), Nonso Anozie (Sweet Tooth), Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton (Under the Bridge), Oleksandr Rudynskyi (The Agency), Ida Brooke (Dune: Part Three), Gemma Chua-Tran (Heartbreak High), and Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus, Harry Potter, The Death of Stalin).

For over 47 years, Gundam has stood as the defining mech franchise: the original giant robot phenomenon that inspired a global multimedia movement. Now, it’s coming to life as an original live-action adventure that follows rival mech pilots fighting on opposing sides of a decades-long war between Earth and its former space colonies. As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could decide the fate of humanity. With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s never been seen before.

Gundam, which will be released by Netflix, is produced by Legendary Pictures in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks.

With a strong track record of translating fan-driven IP into premium global content, Legendary has established itself as an industry leader for ambitious franchise storytelling built on artistic integrity and long-term vision, delivering cultural and commercial impact across film, television, digital, publishing and comics. Recent successes include A Minecraft Movie (grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide), the Academy Award®-winning Dune: Part Two, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Upcoming projects include Dune: Part Three, the final installment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy, Street Fighter, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, Enola Holmes 3, and new seasons of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Dune: Prophecy, and Drops of God.

Written and directed by Jim Mickle (Sweet Tooth, Cold in July), the Gundam movie is produced by Legendary Pictures in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks.

Mickle will produce with his partner Linda Moran through their company Nightshade, alongside Cale Boyter, Ali Mendes, Sydney Sweeney, Noah Centineo and Enzo Marc. Executive producers are Matthew Jenkins, Makoto Asanuma and Naohiro Ogata.
