Review
In issue #49 of Harley Quinn, we have the distinct pleasure of delving into the backstory behind Althea–the villain* of the story–learning more about what fuels her hatred towards Throatcutter Hill. As with all villains, the best of them have logic and reasoning behind their atrocious behaviours, and Althea is no different. We come to learn that her backstory is complex and layered, which makes her an interesting antagonist to Harley, and she shares those qualities. The line between good and evil is thin, or in this case, evil and eviler, which makes it a juicy read.
As the issue continues, one thing becomes clear: Harley’s quips and remarks over the previous issues are starting to get under Althea’s skin, in both a romantic and annoyed sense. Harley and Althea have this tense will-they-won’t-they energy, which only escalated in this issue. On one page, they’re flirting, on the next, they’re trying to kill each other. The one thing that remains a constant? Harley uses her witty way of flirting to cause more chaos and drama, which results in an explosive outcome.
Verdict
Overall, this issue of Harley Quinn showcases all the great aspects of the character, making for an entertaining read. She is unpredictable, chaotic, and always hilarious, which makes her an endearing character and her comic even more entertaining. Everything is on point, from the writing to the art to the storyline and everything in between. The creative team knocked it out of the park once again, as they clearly understand this character and know what it takes to make her pop, and they do it flawlessly. It’s a testament to Harley’s enduring appeal and the rich storytelling that keeps us coming back for more.
