The BBC has finally put an end to speculation as to when Doctor Who will be returning to UK screens. The broadcaster has revealed that new episodes will begin airing on April 12, 2025, the same day episodes will stream internationally on Disney+.
As with the previous full season, episodes will stream in the UK in BBC iPlayer from 8am before airing on BBC One later that day.
Alongside the news the BBC has also debuted two new posters for season 2 featuring the Doctor (Gatwa) and new companion Belinda Chandra (Varda Sethu).
This season, following Ruby Sunday’s (Millie Gibson) departure at the end of season 1, the Doctor has found a new travelling companion in Belinda. Eagle-eyed fans will remember Varada last appeared as Mundy Flynn in first season episode “Boom”. Season 2 is expected to address the mystery of whether these two character’s are connected.
There will also be plenty of familiar faces returning this season as Doctor Who continues to tease the mystery of Mrs Flood (Anita Dobson) and brings back Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), Shirley Anne Bingham (Ruth Madeley) and UNIT alongside Ruby.
It has also been confirmed that Emmy Award-winner Alan Cumming will be providing the voice of animated villain Mr Ring-a-Ding. Russell T Davies, Showrunner said: “Only Alan Cumming could give a runaway cartoon so much wit, malice, danger and fun. He makes the whole universe of Doctor Who wilder and madder than ever, and it’s an absolute honour to welcome him on board the TARDIS.”
The character is described as a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, in 1952, after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding suddenly looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside – and the consequences are terrifying.
