Review
Exciting news for all MultiVersus lovers out there, DC Comics has just launched a thrilling new series called MultiVersus: Collision Detected. The series acts as a precursor to the video game, providing us with story context for the game while also standing alone as a comic series. Like its video game counterpart, this series combines an eclectic mix of Warner Bros IPs, from DC and Looney Tunes to Tom and Jerry, Gremlins, Game of Thrones, Men in Black, and more. The comic strives to capture the wildly unpredictable and zany energy we’ve all come to love from the video game, but does it deliver?
For those who are unfamiliar, MultiVersus is an online video game played on PlayStations, Xbox, and PCs, and is similar to popular games like Smash Bros or PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. The difference between the other titles mentioned and MultiVersus is that it brings characters from various Warner Bros universes together, and it’s as funny as it is addictive. This comic serves as a prelude to the in-game story, and the first issue features the DC holy trinity—Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman—as they find themselves in a new dimension, a world where the rules of their own universes no longer apply.
As a massive fan of MultiVersus since its beta days, I’ve included it in my main gaming lineup and was intrigued by how it would transition into a comic. The comic pleasantly surprised me; the first issue methodically sets up the story, which lays the groundwork for the expected multiversal adventure despite a somewhat slow start. I was particularly thrilled by the comic’s clever hints at new characters not yet in the game, reminiscent of the Marvel x Fortnite series that teased upcoming skins, using vibrant visuals to tease future additions to the roster.
Verdict
Overall, MultiVersus: Collision Detected is setting up what looks to be a fun romp. While it isn’t changing the game with a groundbreaking story, it’s a mix of famous characters, and the promise of a bonker, multiversal story stacked with action feels promising. For a 6 issue series, I would’ve liked to have seen a first issue with a little more oomph, as we don’t have much time to waste. But, considering the game’s complex and fast-paced nature, this comic has the potential for an exhilarating multiverse journey.
