Review
This week the Absolute Power storyline catches up with Tom King’s Wonder Woman as we get to see yet another angle to DC’s latest event. King lends his character-focussed storytelling to a moment from earlier in the chaos. Filling in a blank spot before last week’s Task Force VII #1 and taking several key characters out of the field in the process.
If, like me, you were a little confused when Mary Marvel and Billy Batson referenced a sacrifice made by Wonder Woman to keep them safe. Confuse no more. Wonder Woman #11 has all the answers and is well worth the skip backwards in time. The issue opens at the Watergate Hotel in Washington as Diana, John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Detective Chimp, Specter and the Marvels are playing cards. King sets the scene quickly and calmly as the friends indulge in a game of Go Fish before an Amazo robot comes crashing through the window.
It’s true the writing is a little less complex than the usual Tom King affair. But that doesn’t mean there’s any compromise on quality or character. In fact I’d say this is one of King’s best action-focussed stories in recent memory. He writes a relentlessness to the Amazo which is magically made even more impactful as the robot spouts endless Dickens quotes whilst simultaneously landing punches. The combination is unexpected but entertaining to read. Giving just a further glimpse in to potential flaws in the programming which might aid the surviving heroes down the line.
Even as Absolute Power enters its third week it’s still heartbreaking to see these heroes fall. As the Amazo wipes magical characters off the board there’s a heightened sense of emotion in Diana’s responses which is typical of King’s portrayal of the character thus far. Despite the need to bend to fit DC’s event there’s no need to compromise on character right? Who can you always trust never to compromise? It’s King.
Tony S. Daniel’s versatility keeps up with Tim’s fast moving story. From seeing the gang sat around peacefully to the confusion as Amazo crashes through the window. Daniel brings an energy which tracks every frenzied moment of the fight right through to its pulse pounding and heartbreaking ending.
Verdict
DC’s Absolute Power claims yet more victims as Wonder Woman and the Justice League Dark fall foul of one of Amanda Waller’s Amazo robots.
