Today, Variety has published a huge cover story diving deep in to the future of the Star Trek franchise. As part of that piece the trade as released a first look still from the highly anticipated Section 31 streaming movie which will bring Michelle Yeoh back to the franchise.
Originally, Section 31 was announced as a TV series centered on Philippa Georgiou, the semi-reformed tyrant Yeoh originated on Discovery. But between COVID delays and the Oscar-winning phenomenon of Everything Everywhere All at Once, there wasn’t room for Yeoh to commit to a series and thus the project pivoted to an event movie.
Georgiou was last seen in the two part episode “Terra Firma” where it as identified that between crossing to our universe from the mirror-verse and travelling over 900 years in to the future, she was now in a life threatening situation. The only way to stop her from essentially falling apart was to use the Guardian of Forever’a portal to return her to her own time. Could this mean that characters from Strange New Worlds could appear in the film? Watch this space.
The still (below) gives little away for the film’s story but it certainly looks as though Georgiou is back to full health following her trip to the 32rd second century with the rest of the crew of Discovery.
As well as releasing our first look at the film, Variety has also revealed that Kacey Rohl has joined the cast of the film playing a young Rachel Garrett. If that name rings a bell it should. Rachel Garrett will go on to captain the U.S.S. Enterprise-C and become a key figure in the much-loved “Yesterday’s Enterprise” episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Alongside Yeoh and Rohl, Section 31 is set to star Omari Hardwick (Power), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Emmy® winner Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia) and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry).
No premiere date for the film has been confirmed at the time of writing but it is expected to stream later this year.
