Despite the finale of Willow heavily implying that there would be two more additional seasons to round off Elora Danan’s story, Disney have decided to pull the plug completely. That’s right, the sequel to Ron Howard’s beloved 1988 fantasy film has now been cancelled after just one season.
Willow certainly wasn’t a cultural phenomenon, but it wasn’t trying to be. It was a lighthearted, fun and magical series that introduced new fans to a world that many would now call nostalgic. Considering that Willow is still very much an IP under Lucasfilms’ belt, Willow Ufgood may still have a future.
Disney and Lucasfilm have currently been reassessing their upcoming release state. A few Star Wars projects were abandoned, including Kevin Feige’s unknown project and Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron. Willow has now joined those projects in purgatory, and it’s likely that more could follow in their footsteps.
The cancellations come as a result of companies, including Disney and Netflix, reducing streaming content in an attempt to make profit.
Of course, you’ll still be able to rewatch season one on Disney+, but it’s sad knowing that we’ll never find out what they had planned for Elora and her friends. The future is unknown, perhaps Willow‘s future lies elsewhere.
Willow stars Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Amer Chadha-Patel and Tony Revolori. Warwick Davis returns to his role as Willow Ufgood and Joanne Whalley reprises her role as Queen Sorsha.
