This weekend was an amazing weekend for Dragon Ball fans. The latest movie, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, which is actually the 21st film in the franchise, opened up to the United States this weekend and… It’s safe to say that it caused quite the fuss. The 3D animated feature, which played in over 3000 screens, surpassed Universal’s Beast and claimed $20.1 million at the box office.
Idris Elba’s Beast opened to $11.5 million while Sony’s wacky Bullet Train earned $8 million in its third weekend.
“We’re absolutely thrilled that Dragon Ball fans could come together to experience and enjoy this amazing film in theaters,” Mitchel Berger, Crunchyroll’s senior VP of global commerce, said. “Crunchyroll thanks all of the fans, whether or not you are a ‘super’ fan or a newcomer, and we hope they come back again and again.”
As a comparison, 2018’s Broly eared $22.3 million across a 6-day holiday weekend in the US, and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 grossed $17.6 million. However, while opening to a “super” weekend, Gohan and Piccolo couldn’t dethrone Demon Slayer: Mugen Train which opened to $21.2 million and became the biggest foreign language debut in U.S. box office and the biggest anime movie in the world with $500 million at the box office.
