Back in September of 2021, following a report via Deadline, we reported that Howard Shore, the legendary composer behind The Lord of the Rings, was in talks to return to Middle-Earth for Amazon Studios’ upcoming series. After that, history became legend. Legend became myth, and it was never discussed again… Until today. Yes, that’s right. Howard Shore is set to compose the main title theme for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, just like how John Williams returned to compose the theme for Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Tolkien fans know just how important Shore’s music is, even to this day. The music of The Lord of the Rings brought the trilogy to life in a way that hasn’t really been topped. Shore received three Oscar’s for his work on The Lord of the Rings for a reason, and they are still regarded as some of the best soundtracks in cinema. Howard’s music is legendary, so the fact that he’s coming back is utterly brilliant.
However, that isn’t the only good news. Emmy-Winner and absolute genius Bear McCreary, composer of God of War and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, will be composing the full episodic score. According to the latest report, McCreary has been composing the full soundtrack over the last year with hours of content at his disposal. Purely based on his previous works, The Lord of the Rings fans are in for an absolute treat.
“With their deep understanding of the Tolkien legendarium, coupled with two of the greatest musical talents of our age, we’re thrilled that Howard and Bear are joining us on this epic journey to Middle-earth,” said Bob Bowen, Worldwide Head of Music for Amazon Studios.
“As I set out to compose the score for this series, I strove to honor Howard Shore’s musical legacy. When I heard his majestic main title, I was struck by how perfectly his theme and my original score, though crafted separately, fit together so beautifully. I am excited for audiences to join us on this new musical journey to Middle-earth.” Said McCreary.
To celebrate, two tracks from McCreary’s soundtrack have been released via Amazon Music.
The multi-season drama will launch on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide on Friday, September 2, with new episodes available weekly. Are you excited for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
