This could be very exciting news, if it is indeed true. Of course, nothing has been confirmed yet so it’s best to take this all with a pinch of salt. According to a report by Deadline, composer Howard Shore is in talks to return to Middle Earth. Howard Shore’s absolutely stunning soundtrack for The Lord of the Rings trilogy won him three Oscards so his presence on the show would provide a huge boost.
Sure, we may not hear some of the iconic tunes that have stayed with us since the release of the trilogy. But an opportunity such as this would allow Shore to explore Middle Earth again and bring new backgrounds and characters to life. That’s the amazing thing about Shore’s soundtracks from both Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Each faction, species and location has its very own theme and aesthetic. We know what the orcs and Urak-Hai look like, but we also know what they sound like. As soon as that theme begins, we know exactly what it means.
With Amazon adapting more of Tolkien’s work… It’s safe to say that there is a lot of anxiety in the air. We don’t really know what this unnamed series will be like. But Howard Shore’s presence could help with the uneasiness.

“Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.
Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”
