It’s been a while since we heard any news on the sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat from Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line. But overnight, Deadline has brought us a solid update on the sequels development progress.
According to the trade, New Line has signed on the original film’s director, Simon McQuoid, to return to helm the sequel. Kombat was McQuoid’s feature directorial debut and was released simultaneously in US cinemas and on HBO Max during the pandemic in April 2021.
Whilst no plot details have been revealed, it was confirmed earlier this year that Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater is set pen the script. Slater takes over from the original film’s screenwriting team of Greg Russo, Dave Callaham, and Oren Uziel.
2021’s Mortal Kombat starred Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, Max Huang, Sisi Stringer, Matilda Kimber and Laura Brent.
