According to Deadline and a few other sources, HBO are looking to develop yet another series set within Westeros. However, rather than focusing on the Realm’s history, this new supposed series is looking to go beyond the events of Game of Thrones‘ 8th season. Yes, this new series, if it does exist, will be a sequel to the controversial 8th and will see the return of Jon Snow.
The report says that the show in currently in its “exploratory” stage, with Kit Harington expected to reprise his role as the brooding hero, aka Aegon Targaryen. If this series does get the green light, this will be the first sequel series within the Game of Thrones franchise. As of right now, HBO have been heavily focused on telling stories set in the past– House of the Dragon, Dunk and Egg, as well as The Sea Snake. So, this mysterious project may be HBO’s attempt at experimenting with the lore revolving around The North and what lies beyond The Wall.
Hang on, Jon Snow’s story is over isn’t it? Game of Thrones divided audiences when Season 8 came to an end. The fact that HBO are looking to revisit that area is incredibly bold of them. It is still a touchy subject, so HBO have to be very careful when it comes to all things Game of Thrones. Based on how House of the Dragon looks, this could be the start of a brand new relationship with the fans. However, revisiting Season 8 could reopen sore wounds…
To add fuel to the fire, HBO Max took to Twitter once the rumour began to run rampant with a fun little tweet…
Now, we’re currently deep within a phenomenon whereby everyone is absolutely loving the return of classic characters and their actors. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Tom Cruise as Maverick, Michael Keaton as Batman, Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan, and Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker. Could this be HBO’s attempt at jumping on that bandwagon?
In terms of a story to tell, there could be something there. The world beyond The Wall is incredible, and there are probably scarier things out there than just Giants and Mammoths. What’s more, we could actually see Jon come to terms with his true lineage. Could Drogon come back into the fold? While the events of Game of Thrones were anchored by the books until they went their separate ways, this series could really… do whatever it wanted. Taking audience reactions of Season 8 into consideration, is this a great idea? Well, that is debatable.
However, nothing official has been confirmed so take this all with a pinch of salt. What do you think about this show? Do you want to see Jon Snow back in action? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
