It was back in May of 2020 that we first heard Disney+ was working on a small screen adaption of Rick Riordan’s iconic Percy Jackson series. With the pandemic having slowed development, news has been slim. But now Riordan has confirmed the series has cast its lead role with a very familiar face.
As reported by Deadline, The Adam Project star Walker Scobell will be taking on the role of Percy. The series centres on the 12-year-old Percy, a modern demigod who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers. When the sky god, Zeus, accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt, Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.
The Percy Jackson series was previously adapted in to two movies, the first arriving in cinemas in 2010 and grossing $225.4M worldwide. A second film, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, landed in 2013 and went on to gross $202.2M.
Riordan is writing the series pilot episode alongside Jon Steinberg (Black Sails). James Bobin (Muppets Most Wanted) is currently tapped to direct the episode. Steinberg will oversee the series with his producing partner Dan Shotz. Steinberg and Shotz serve as executive producers alongside Bobin, Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe and The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell and D.J. Goldberg.
