It was another great weekend at the worldwide box office for the Caped Crusader as The Batman cruised past $400M worldwide.
The Matt Reeves directed film brought in an estimated $66M in its second weekend at the US box office. The film easily retained its crown at the top of the chart and has now amassed over $238.5M on home turf. That $66M haul represents a meagre -51% over its opening weekend in a market where most superhero fare falls closer to -70% in its second weekend. -51% puts The Batman ahead of the second weekend box office of Batman v. Superman (-69%), and Dark Knight Rises (-61%), Justice League (-56%) and The Dark Knight (-53%).
The film’s estimated $238.5M also makes it the second largest domestic haul of the pandemic era. There’s little chance that Batman catches up to Spider-Man: No Way Home which is likely to cross $800M domestic by the end of this week. But the Dark Knight has other targets in sight.
The Warner Bros. film reportedly grossed an estimated $66.6M from 75 international markets over the weekend. We don’t have individual numbers yet but that brings the film’s international gross to around $225M for a worldwide total north of $463.2M. All that means that The Batman is sure to cross the magic half-a-billion mark by mid-week this week. Don’t forget the film also opens in China on Friday (March 18) which could add a substantial amount to the bank next weekend…
Written and directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman is set to star Robert Pattinson in the title role, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Paul Dano as Edward Nashton.
The Batman is in UK cinemas now.
