Could THE END OF OAK STREET Be a Secret Cloverfield Movie?

If there is one thing J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot love more than the overuse of lens flare, it is hiding a film’s true identity in plain sight.

When the trailer first dropped for David Robert Mitchell’s sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, audiences were promised a tense, survival film about a suburban American street ripped away by a unknown event and dropped into prehistoric times forcing the residents to try and survive impossible odds.

But for seasoned sci-fi fans, the trailers didn’t just look like an original sci-fi thriller with a cool concept but they felt like a Cloverfield film hidden in plain sight. Here is why I think we could be set up for another classic Cloverfield incident.

Before we dive into the evidence, if you haven’t seen it already you can check out the film’s trailer in the player below:

    The “Platt” Family Name

The central family fighting for survival in film is named the Platts. To casual viewers, it’s just a name. To Cloverfield die-hards, it’s an immediate red flag. Hud Platt was the unwilling cameraman in the original 2008 Cloverfield film who met his demise at the hand or the foot of the film’s monster. Bad Robot is notorious for hiding interconnected lore in character details. It could just be a coincidence that a movie about a massive, world-altering event features a family sharing the same last name with one of the franchise’s original characters or could be them trying to be smart and give us a nod to the real films original routes?

    The “Supernatural Event”

The premise of The End of Oak Street alone gives off Cloverfield vibes. It involves a sudden supernatural event that literally plucks an entire neighbourhood out of its present day and drops it into an unfamiliar and prehistoric landscape. This almost lines up perfectly with the multiversal tearing set up in 2018’s The Cloverfield Paradox.

In that film, a quick glance at a character’s phone displays a news alert: “OMG!!! 5 city blocks just disappeared. This can’t be happening…” Elsewhere, in 10 Cloverfield Lane, Emmett describes witnessing giant, blinding flashes of light in the sky right before the attack began. The End of Oak Street trailer looks exactly like what happens to the people inside those disappearing blocks.

Now it can be noted that this film appears to not take place in present day America but the event that kicked-off all the Cloverfield events took place in the not distant future of 2028 and that caused the Kaiju to appear in New York in 2008 so time matters very little to the multiversal event.

    The Classic Title Switch Strategy

Before it was finalised as The End of Oak Street, the film spent a long time in production under the working title Flowervale Street. This concept of hiding a project under an unassuming name is practically a Bad Robot trademark now. Back in 2016, a contained, low-budget thriller originally titled The Cellar was quietly retitled 10 Cloverfield Lane just weeks before hitting cinemas, catching the entire industry off guard.

But the studio took this stealth idea to an entirely new level with The Cloverfield Paradox. Originally filmed under the title God Particle, the movie’s connection to the franchise was kept completely under wraps. In an insane marketing move, Paramount and Netflix held the film back with zero traditional trailers or promotional campaigns. Instead, they dropped a surprise teaser during the Super Bowl LVI broadcast, announcing that the movie would be available to stream immediately after the game ended.

By skipping past the standard months-long marketing, the franchise proved that a Cloverfield film thrives best on absolute secrecy and sudden drops, for better or worse is entirely subjective but The End of Oak Street changing its title right before release follows this exact playbook, keeping audiences guessing about its true identity until the final curtain rises.

    The Real-World Geography Clue

This is where things start to become tin foil hat wearing now. If you look up the geography of Santa Monica, California, you will find a real Oak Street. If you follow that street all the way to its physical end, where does it stop?

It ends directly at Clover Park. You can check it out here.

Regardless if this is a deliberate geographical Easter egg or an unbelievable coincidence, it is exactly the kind of hyper-specific detail that fans of the franchise’s Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) live for.

Bad Robot hasn’t confirmed a single thing however, but they never do until the lights go down in the cinema. Whether The End of Oak Street is an official anthology piece or just a spiritual successor, the connective tissue is too strong for me to ignore.

Ultimately though this could all just be a coincidence and could have literally no connection to the Cloverfield franchise whatsoever, but it’s still fun to think otherwise!

The End of Oak Street will be released in the UK and Ireland on the 14thAugust 2026 by Warner Bros. Pictures.

I am an ex Royal Navy sailor who loves all things geek. I have a strong admiration of anime as well as western television shows and movies. From a young age I was into video games as well as TV shows, often spotted in front of a screen somewhere. My goal is to become a screenwriter/director one day and left the Royal Navy after 9 years to better pursue that dream of mine.
