Going in to the weekend it is fair to say many of us were on the edge of our seats awaiting the results of The Batman‘s performance. Studio estimates suggested the film might make a conservative $90M in the US. Industry experts inflated that figure as high at $170M. Now the final receipts have been tallied and the numbers are in…
The Warner Bros. Pictures release ended the weekend with an estimated $248.5M worldwide comprising of $128.5M domestic and $120M from international territories. A huge and highly successful launch.
But now both of those figures have been revised and the news is even more encouraging. In its home market the Matt Reeves directed picture had been estimated to fall roughly -35% from Saturday to Sunday to reach that $128.5M figure. Once the final results were in that fall was a mere -21%, giving The Batman an official weekend of $134M. The best opening of a Warner Bros. film in the pandemic era and a career best for director Reeves.
Here’s the official domestic figures for the weekend:
But there was a further twist to come in the tale of The Dark Knight. The international figures were also revised up to a final $124M. UK fans led the way with a little over $18M, followed by Mexico with $12.1M, Australia with $9.3M and Brazil with $8.8M. Strong holds across the weekend ensure that Warner Bros. has had its best opening in every territory where The Batman debuted. The film rolls in to Japan on March 11 and China on March 18.
When all is said and done, The Batman has opened to a hugely successful $258M. As per Deadline, the opening is now 5% below The Dark Knight Rises, 14% ahead of Justice League, 48% over Wonder Woman, 50% above The Dark Knight and 152% over pandemic release Godzilla Vs Kong.
Written and directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman is set to star Robert Pattinson in the title role, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Paul Dano as Edward Nashton.
The Batman is in UK cinemas now.
