Netflix is storming ahead with development on a sequel to 2020’s The Old Guard. The adaption of the Image Comics series has been on the hunt for a new director and it looks as though that search is now over.
According to Deadline, Netflix has tapped Yelling To The Sky director Victoria Mahoney to helm the sequel. Mahoney has also directed episodes of Lovecraft Country, Grey’s Anatomy and Power.
The Old Guard was created by writer Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernández. The series follows a team of immortal mercenaries led by Andromache, played in the movie by Charlize Theron. Rucka wrote the script for the 2020 film but it is currently unclear if he will return for the sequel.
The film, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood also starred KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The cast are all expected to return for the sequel.
“Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard,” said Mahoney in a new statement. “I must’ve watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement–being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses. Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences. Warmly tipping my hat to the world Gina, Charlize, Rucka, Fernández, Skydance, Netflix, Marc Evans Productions, Denver & Delilah Films and the entire Team daringly put forward.”
Netflix has yet to share an expected release for the sequel.
