Synopsis
With Constantine obsessed with getting his powers back, he convinces Spooner to join him on the quest to find the Fountain of Imperium. After they find themselves at the end of the Spanish Civil War, Spooner makes an unexpected bond with someone she feels they need to protect them from everyone, including Constantine. Now that they have a special guest on board the Waverider, Nate, Zari, Behrad, Gary and Astra all work together but experience some growing pains along the way. Meanwhile, Sara and Lita are concerned about Rory’s health, so they try to convince him to take it seriously.
Review
Constantine takes center stage this week when he and Spooner head to 1939 Spain to find a magical fountain. Due to the animated episode from earlier in the season Constantine has since lost all his magic and has been obsessed with regaining his previously incredible power.
Constantine has always been a favourite of mine since his original TV show on NBC which sadly ended way too prematurely after just 13 episodes. Since then he was incorporated into the Arrow TV show and then brought onto the Legends and has since thrived in the Arrowverse and Matt Ryan has become the only actor to accurately portray this character (even returning to voice him in the animated movies).
Sadly their arrival to 1939 throws the duo right into the path of the Nazi’s who also want to find this illusive fountain of magic. They come across a young mute who accidently came across the fountain and now reluctantly wields its power.
Elsewhere the main cast of the Legends have to deal with last episode’s baby alien who has since grown quite large and out of control. They are mostly a non-story though so Constantine and Spooner can be the focus.
Also following on from the previous episode, Rory is bonding with his daughter about both of them being pregnant. Understandably Rory is none too happy about being pregnant but throughout the episode soon accepts the situation for what it is. It is still a bizarre plot which if you go back to season 1 of Legends of Tomorrow and mention one day Rory will become pregnant with an alien baby, you would be laughed out of the room.
Back to 1939 Spain, they manage to find their way to the fountain of magic thanks to the mute kid only to find it has entirely dried up. We get a powerful moment from Matt Ryan showing how desperate Constantine is to get his magic back, again a testament to the actor and how much he understands the role. The show takes a dark turn however when he drinks a potion he obtained at the beginning of the episode from a Vampire and goes on a magic rampage killing all the Nazi’s. Even going as far to sell Crowley’s soul painting to the vampire again for more of the potions and going even darker he brainwashes Spooner before she can tell the Legends.
I feel they might be setting Constantine up to become the final bad for the Legends as he was very quick to hide his new addiction but whether that ends up being the case we’ll have to wait and see.
Verdict
Similar to last episode, this was not in the strongest lineup this season, however to see more of Spooner and allowing Matt Ryan to get deeper with the character of Constantine and showing all his flaws was great to witness and I look forward to seeing where this character ends up going.
