Back in May we learned that Warner Bros., DC Films and HBO Max are pushing forward with a live-action Batgirl film. At the time it was revealed that Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah would take on directorial duties. Now a new report from The Illuminderi has us thinking a Batgirl: Year One adaption is on the way.
According to the report the film is looking to cast an actress in her early 20s for the part of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. It goes without saying that this fits the characters age from the comics. Plenty of actors in their 20s also play teenagers if they’re looking to follow an even younger Babs.
The production is also searching for actor in their 50s to take on the role of Commissioner Gordon. The fact an actor is being sought for the role tells us that neither J.K. Simmons nor Jeffrey Wright will be taking on the role. That places Batgirl in potentially separate universes to the Snyder Cut and Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
Here’s where things get interesting. An actor in his 50s to 60s to play a villain that is described as “a disgruntled former firefighter.” A former firefighter you say? Could that mean the film is planning to use Firefly as the main villain? Of course Firefly is intrinsically tied to the origin of Batgirl, as is Killer-Moth.
No release date is set for the movie as yet. Watch this space for more news.
