Theories are fun. Being able to speculate the outcome of a show unites fans and creates really interesting dialogues between people who have different modes of thought. However, at the same time, theories can be dangerous. An idea can fester and when it doesn’t pan out it can lead to feeling disappointed and let down. But we’re not going to let that stop us. Today, we’re here to talk about WandaVision.
WandaVision is a fairly difficult show to discuss in terms of theories. Despite being six episodes in, we still don’t really know where the show is going. But it hasn’t stopped fans from speculating and forming their own realities, much like Wanda. One theory peaked our interest though. Mainly because it’s an odd combination of both possible and highly unlikely. Which is a really strange combination.
The theory revolves around the animated Avengers show, Avengers Assemble. Within the Disney XD show, Ultron takes the form of Human government official called Marsh who aims to take out the Avengers. The idea is that the S.W.O.R.D director Tyler Hayward is actually Ultron in disguise.
Now, there isn’t actually any evidence to support this per se. Hayward seems to despise super powered beings like Wanda. This seems fairly familiar when you look at Marsh from Avengers Assemble. The biggest thing that about this theory that rings true isn’t the animated show, it’s actually S.W.O.R.D.
In All-New Halloween Spooktacular!, we learn that Hayward and S.W.O.R.D are tracking Vision’s Vibranium decay. Although it isn’t clear why, some have speculated that Ultron is after Vision’s body so that he may be revived. Jarvis survived after being “defeated” by Ultron while in their source code forms, so it is entirely possible that Ultron did the same despite the outcome of Age of Ultron. What’s interesting is that it seems as though Wanda is a secondary objective for S.W.O.R.D. Wanda took Vision’s body from the S.W.O.R.D, and this could explain Hayward’s desperate attempt to retrieve the corpse via blowing Wanda up, which obviously didn’t go according to plan. It seemed like a personal attack against Hayward. Whatever the reason is, Vision’s body is very important to Hayward.
But what if we are looking at Ultron in the wrong way? The idea of Ultron in Age of Ultron was simply corrupted by the Mind Stone. Without the Stone, Ultron was an almost perfect system that would have protected earth from outside forces, like the Chitauri. Doesn’t that sound familiar? Isn’t that S.W.O.R.D’s objective? What if Hayward is attempting to revive Ultron so he can fulfill his original purpose. With the Avengers fragmented, and Ultron’s father gone, reviving the program may be earth’s best hope. If that’s the case, Hayward may just be a pawn that is being manipulated by Ultron who has sworn by his pure intentions.
On top of that, Wikipedia has listed James Spader in the cast of WandaVision. Now, take that with a pinch of salt since it is Wikipedia. It’s also worth mentioning that he isn’t listed on IMDB either. However, if he were to appear it would most likely be in the form of a flashback much like Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver.
Given Ultron’s popularity and potential, we highly doubt that he’ll appear in just a few episodes. It could be that he is being saved for the next ensemble movie or series which will feature the new wave of heroes. With that in mind, Ultron could simply be teased rather than appear as a primary villain. You also have to consider that the main threat could be residing in Westview. Could it be Wanda or Agnes?
It might be that Ultron doesn’t appear at all and Hayward simply has a grudge against heroes. The question of Vision’s importance still remains… Why is Vision so important in WandaVision? Only time will tell.
