Last night #FireGinaCarano trended on Twitter for what was not the first time. The Mandalorian star has generated plenty of headline for her controversial social media posts over gender identity and politics. But after her latest societal insights caused further controversy, Lucasfilm has taken the decision to remove Carano from future projects.
Her latest, now deleted, posts from Instagram were interpreted as anti-Semitic. In the posts Carano drew comparisons between being a Republican in 2021 to being Jewish during the Holocaust.
In a statement released overnight, Lucasfilm rightly distanced themselves from Carano:
“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
Given the runaway popularity of Carano’s character Cara Dune it was anticipated that she would be headlining her own spin-off in the near future. Any plans for this have now been scrapped. It remains to be seen if the character will be written off the show or re-cast.
Following her firing, Variety also confirmed that Carano has been dropped by her agency UTA:
