After the bizarre and somewhat disappointing nature of Netflix’s last attempt at bringing Godzilla to life, we really didn’t think they would try again. But here we are. Netflix has dropped a trailer and poster for their upcoming anime series entitled Godzilla Singular Point.
I think the first thing to say is that this is going to be incredibly different compared to the animated films. First of all, it is a series rather than a trilogy of films. This series looks to be taking place in a modern day setting which is great. With this in mind it looks as though we’ll be getting a very typical Godzilla story whereby Kaiju’s attack a city. It’s a pretty simple formula but it’s also incredibly effective especially when it comes to Kaiju-centered films and shows.
Take SSSS. Gridman, for example. That series took a bunch of kids and put them in the eye of a storm- a war between city-stomping Kaiju and Mechs. It worked very well and it looks as though Godzilla Singular Point will be taking a similar route.
You can check out the poster below.

The art for the human characters is being done by Kazue Kato who wrote Blue Exorcist. Whereas the Kaiju are being drawn by Studio Ghibli animator Eiji Yamamori. My Hero Academia‘s Studio Bones and Land of the Lustrous studio Orange will animate the series in a partnership that will combine hand-drawn animation and CG.

With just a short teaser, it is already clear that the animation is a lot smoother. Full CG animation can appear very clunky and static but a nice combination should really make the Kaiju stand out while also maintaining that traditional anime aesthetic.
The series follows Mei, Yun, and their team who aim to take on the Kaiju threat head on.
Godzilla Singular Point will air on Netflix in 2021. Are you excited to see Godzilla back in action again? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
