HARLEY QUINN showrunners celebrate season 3 renewal in EW interview

Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern talk about the recent news of HARLEY QUINN being renewed for season 3.

Harley Quinn (DC Universe)

If, like us, you’re still celebrating the news that Harley Quinn has been renewed for season 3 then we have an interview for you. Co-showrunners Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern recently spoke with EW to discuss the show’s return.

“We knew the show was gonna end up on HBO Max eventually,” says Schumacker, “and we knew that that there were talks happening about a season three, but all of that was happening like almost right when quarantine started.”

“So we had a really long time to think about what we might do, or at least the gist of the story that we might want to tell for season 3. We’re just super excited to finally actually be able to put that into action and actually get the ideas ping-ponging off both the returning writers and the inevitable new writers that we’re getting to hire now. I am very excited to finally get those ideas out and about in the ether.”

Seasons 1 and 2 of Harley debuted as DC Universe exclusives in the US before recently being added to HBO Max, also owned by WarnerMedia. With DC Universe becoming a premium comic book subscription service Harley Quinn will be making a permanent move to HBO Max from season 3.

Speaking of season 3, Halpern says “That’s the big thing for us to chew on. The thing we have discussed preliminarily is the idea that these two characters have had a lot of toxic relationships in their past.”

“Although Ivy and Kite Man wasn’t toxic, it also wasn’t an equal relationship, you know? He loved her a lot more than she loved him. So this is the first time they’re both going to be in a relationship where they really and truly have affection towards one another. They have a lot of responsibility. So I think like, ‘what is it like to be in a good relationship after you’ve only ever been in bad relationships with abusive people?’ is a big theme we want to play with.”

Harley Quinn stars Kaley Cuoco as the voice of Harley, and she’ll be joined by Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, Ron Funches, JB Smoove, Jason Alexander, Wanda Sykes, Giancarlo Esposito, Natalie Morales, Jim Rash, Diedrich Bader, Tony Hale and Chris Meloni.
