Nobody can deny that it’s been a tough week for DC Comics. Following the news of huge layoffs across the WarnerMedia brand, Publisher Jim Lee has now confirmed new details on the shape of the future DC landscape.
Speaking with THR the DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher confirmed that “[DC] are still in the business of publishing comics,” but that major changes are on the way.
At the forefront of many of those changes is the much rumoured future of DC Universe. The streaming platform which launched in 2018 has been the stuff of media legend with fans writing on the subscription service from the moment it launched.
But almost two years and 71 hours of live-action and 52 hours of original animated content, the service is looking for a very different future.
“The original content that is on DCU is migrating to HBO Max. Truthfully, that’s the best platform for that content.” said Lee. “The amount of content you get, not just DC , but generally from WarnerMedia, is huge and it’s the best value proposition, if I’m allowed to use that marketing term. We feel that is the place for that.”
Many had expected DC Universe would become a subscription service which allows readers to dive deep in to the DC archives. The service already boasts around 25,000 comics from the catalogue and it seems the company wants to continue that level of access.
“In regards to the community and experience that DCU created, and all the backlist content, something like 20.000 to 25,000 different titles, and the way it connected with fans 24-7, there is always going to be a need for that. So we’re excited to transform it and we’ll have more news on what that will look like. It’s definitely not going away.”
