As expected there were plenty of shocks at last night’s Oscars ceremony as Parasite took the prize for Best Picture and Best Director for Boon Joon-ho.
In a year when the lack of diversity amongst the nominee’s was the top headline, Parasite becomes the first non-English film to take the top prize in a record breaking year.
In recent days Parasite had become the favourite to take the award, overtaking original favourites Joker and 1917.
Sam Mendes 1917 had to settle for technical prizes, taking the awards for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Mixing. The film has been experience unrivalled holdovers at the US box office, you can read all about it in our box office roundup coming later this morning.
As expected Joaquin Phoenix took the award for Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck in Joker. Joker also picked up the award for Best Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir’s outstandingly haunting music. Guðnadóttir has now picked up almost every major musical score award this season.
