    SCREAM VI (2023) Review

Scream VI comes to UK cinemas on March 8, 2023 from Paramount Pictures.

    Synopsis

Following the latest Ghostface killings, the four survivors leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.

    Review

Last year saw a resurgence for the Scream franchise and Ghostface himself, after being left in limbo back in 2011 (not including MTV’s which ran from 2015 until 2019).

Following on from 2022’s Scre4m the story picks up one year after the events with the four survivors moving to New York City to try and escape the horrors they went through back in Woodsboro.  However thanks to some outside forces their story is known far and wide and they are now infamous for the events (for better or worse).

However a new and far more brutal Ghostface has appeared in the city and is leaving behind a trail of bodies in its wake!

The film is quick to leap into the action, only briefly allowing you time to relax before Ghostface turns up again to lower the cast list down.

Speaking of the cast, we have the survivors from the previous film returning, Melissa Barrera in the lead role as Sam Carpenter the daughter of Billy Loomis as well as Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter, Jasmine Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding as Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin respectively as well as a few newcomers to fill out the roster.  While all the characters don’t particularly have any deep characteristics and could easily slot into the cliche tropes of Slasher Flicks (the jock, the nerd, the promiscuous one etc) the film leans into this, often using Mindy as the voice of cliche by pointing out the beats these films are known for.

Regardless of the cliches being front and center throughout though the film still had me guessing through the roster of characters of who is under the mask! A mystery they keep well hidden until the final act of the film!

The film also delves alot deeper into the gore than in previous iterations, sometimes even into what I thought looked abit ‘Final Destination’ levels.  With some deaths being incredibly graphic in both visual and audio which I felt added to the intensity of the film.

Obviously we avoid any spoilers in the film but as with all the other Scream films the reveal at the end did stick the landing which some other recent ‘whodunit’ films had failed at.

    Verdict

Scream VI is another solid entry into the franchise. While it rarely treads on new ground, with the exception of its setting, it knows what it is and leans into it.  Full of action, gore, suspense and mystery it is what I would consider a great night in the cinema with friends! Scream VI is a bloody good time!
