Buffy: The Last Vampire Slayer #3 is published by BOOM! Studios, written by Casey Gilly, illustrated by Joe Jaro, coloured by Joana Lafuente and lettered by Ed Dukeshire.

Print copies will be available from 9th February 2022 either direct from Boom! Studios or from your local comic book store, digital copies will be available to download from the usual content providers.

    Synopsis

Spike’s unorthodox coven is revealed, along with their plans to continue Willow’s work and save humanity, but they’re struggling with spells and the brutality of the vampires against witches had deep ramifications. But Buffy is having visions of the past that brings up conflict with Spike, as well as guilt. Can they find a way to make the spells work, find out what part Thessaly plays in all of this, as well as deal with a threat more deadly than perpetual darkness?

    Review

Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer #3 sees the continuation of this new future-set story arc in the Buffy universe. The issue finds Thessaly beginning to settle into her new life with the strong possibility that it may be without Buffy by her side. Fans will remember that the cliffhanger to the second issue saw the return of a well known character, Spike, who returns unexpectedly to give Buffy a helping hand.

But is that helping hand needed or even is it wanted? Ten years is certainly a long time and Spike has some explaining to do. As we are beginning to see, Buffy also has her own baggage to deal with. Spike’s coven may well be the answer to finish off Willow’s work and save humanity and Buffy needs to fight her own past demons if she is going to be of any help.

So far I am enjoying this new story arc, a completely new spin on a story that I’ve loved for years but it still feels like a Buffy story but yet has a more realistic and more relatable feel to it, Casey Gilly has injected new life into the Buffy multiverse with the gritty and emotional dark story that looks set to get even more darker as we continue on the arc.

Joe Jaro and Joana Lafuente combine to form the perfect artistic combination that brings new feeling to the story, dramatic illustrations with deep dark tones carry this dramatic story in the best way allowing the reader to be immersed in the story.

    Verdict

A new and exciting story arc that feels more gritty than Buffy ever has before. Casey Gilly appears to be pushing our favourite Slayer down a dark path which could change the multiverse as we know it.
