Godzilla vs Kong has been out for almost a week in the United Kingdom. Obviously, it hasn’t been out for long but already we’ve got a pretty decent idea of how it has performed. Not only has it done well in regards to its reception, even Elon Musk Tweeted about it, but it has also surpassed viewership expectations both through streaming and at the box office.
So, what are the figures? Well, lets take a look at the box office figures first. Honestly, given that cinemas have had an incredibly rough time throughout the pandemic, we weren’t expecting a lot. But Godzilla vs Kong has surprised us. According to Deadline, Godzilla vs Kong brought in $48.5 million in its first 5 days in the States (roughly 3000 theaters) and completely decimated previous projections. Not only was this a great result for the MonsterVerse, it also shined a positive light on the aspect of moving forward.
“This movie represents a way for people to slowly re-introduce themselves into a social environment,” Josh Grode, CEO of Legendary Entertainment tells Deadline.
That’s just looking at the United States. What about the rest of the world? The current box office stands at just over $285 million. International territories contributed $237 million towards that overall figure which equates to 83%. China alone grossed almost half of the entire box office- $136 million. What you also have to consider is that Godzilla vs Kong has not yet opened in some of the key markets like Japan and parts of Europe.
This is where streaming comes in.
Streaming ratings from Samba TV reported that 3.6 million households watched at least five minutes of Godzilla vs. Kong on HBO Max in the first five days. To put that in perspective, Wonder Woman 1984 had 2.2 million households and Zack Snyder’s Justice League clocked 1.8 million U.S HBO Max users.
WarnerMedia Direct-to-Consumer EVP and General Manager Andy Forssell said that Godzilla vs Kong “had a larger viewing audience than any other film or show on HBO Max since launch.”
The figures speak for themselves. This is an incredibly good sign for the somewhat turbulent MonsterVerse. It appears as though audiences still want to watch destructive monster movies. With these current projections, Godzilla vs Kong may have just saved the MonsterVerse.
