Synopsis
The Daily Planet has become a beacon of hope for the living as the Anti-Life Equation sweeps the planet. What’s left of the Justice League have begun to gather there, bringing survivors and family alike. But the city is being overrun with infected humans…and superhumans! The war for Metropolis begins!
Review
There’s a moment in the fantastic DCeased #4 which had me screaming bloody murder at Tom Taylor, seconds later I was applauding him for having the guts to make the choices he does with this issue.
Featuring some of the best writing in current comics DCeased is a story which has absolutely no fear in killing of its most major characters and that cannot be applauded enough.
Nobody is safe and because of it I feel a genuinely high level of anxiety every time I pick this book up. That’s a feeling I don’t often get reading mainstream comics and on its own is enough to earn this issue it’s 10/10 score.
We’re over the half-way line in the series now and so I expected this issue to start building towards its conclusion. If it did then I have a horrible feeling we won’t be seeing a happy ending here Super Friends.
My preconceived ideas of the story meant that I expected to begin to feel a sense of hope. Like our heroes were going to discover a way to cure the virus or that they would at least find a safe haven from where they could begin to devise their plan of attack.
Nope.
There’s no hope in this issue. There’s no miracle cure. There’s no safe haven. Taylor has constructed a nuclear destruct button for the DCU and his finger is hovering very closely above it.
Appearances by Gigantic, Atom and Captain Atom all widen the scope of the story to include more of the DCU. Black Lightning and his family also make their first appearance in this issue hammering home the point that the entire universe is at stake.
I can’t say much more for fear of spoiling the book but suffice to say this is not one you will want to put down once you have started it.
Verdict
Earning its first 10/10 of the series, DCeased #4 is an emotionally intense marathon through the remains of the DC Universe. Just when you thought you’d suffered enough losses Tom Taylor rips the rug out from underneath and delivers the biggest gut punch of the series to date.
