The Fast & Furious franchise proved its global appeal this weekend by delivery a $180m opening for spin-off movie Hobbs & Shaw.

Drawing a respectable $60.8m in the domestic market the movie easily topped Disney’s The Lion King which fell in to second place in its third week, adding a further $38.2m to its $430.8m domestic total.

In second week domestic news Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood pulled in a further $20m bringing its domestic tally to $78.8m.

But it was the international market where Hobbs & Shaw proved to be the truly dominant force. Though the movie has yet to open in China it was able to pull in an impressive $120m.

The film debuted at #1 in 52 of the markets it opened in, with Russia leading the way with an $8.1m. Additional top debuts include us here in the UK with $7.8m, Indonesia ($7.69m), India ($7.4m), Mexico ($6.96m), Japan ($6.58m), Taiwan ($6.2m), Germany ($5.45m), Australia ($4.89m), Malaysia ($4.67m) and Brazil ($3.9m).

Hobbs & Shaw makes that illusive Chiense debut on August 23.

Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down. But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.

Directed by David Leitch Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw stars Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba and Vanessa Kirby.
