Oni Press – the multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher of groundbreaking comics and graphic novels since 1997 – and the world-renowned Archie Comic Publications, Inc. are proud to announce ARCHIE #5 – kicking off a momentous new jumping-on point for the hilarious and heartfelt ongoing series that that AIPT calls “simply astounding”! This January, join an all-star cast of Riverdale’s newest fast favorites – with New York Times best-selling writer Ben H. Winters (EC’s Cruel Universe, Benjamin), rising star Nick Cagnetti (Spirit of the Shadows, Pink Lemonade) and Eisner Award-winning artist Fábio Moon (Daytripper) – as they head into a riotous new adventure … beginning with a shocking turn of events for Archie’s next-door neighbor and all-around good kid: Betty Cooper!
“Sure, he’s the name above the title, but there’s a whole lot more to Archie (the comic) than just Archie (the guy),” said writer Ben H. Winters. “In issues 5 through 8, I’m excited to present a star turn from our girl Betty, whose world is turned upside down by (what else?) money—as well as one from Reggie, who gets into a prank war with our red-headed hero that takes them both into unexpected territory. As for #8, let’s just say you can’t spell cross-over spectacular without A R C H I E!”
Betty Cooper has just received some surprising news: Her dad’s mother’s great aunt’s second cousin (once removed), Aunt Elizabeth, has suddenly died at the respectable age of 104, leaving an unexpected inheritance to her namesake, sort-of niece. Betty worries how this windfall will disrupt her familiar life, but luckily her best friend and bona fide socialite Veronica knows all the tricks for treating her new money like Old Money—all while Archie wonders how he’ll manage to keep two fabulously wealthy girlfriends entertained! Plus: Eisner Award-winning artist Fábio Moon (Daytripper) returns for a new chapter of “Jughead’s Journal,” colliding Jughead with a startlingly familiar face from the future . . .
“This is a perfect place to pick up on Archie if you heard the chatter but missed the first issues,” said Senior Editor Bess Pallares. “Following our reintroduction to Riverdale, which saw Archie grappling with a crisis of identity and purpose within his ‘perfect’ reality, this new arc takes a broader look at his friends, who are starting to ask themselves those big questions as unexpected developments shake up their comfortable routines. The issues still feel like everyday Riverdale stories, full of heart and humor, but that connective thread of mystery—and a little magic—that started in ‘Jughead’s Journal’ is growing stronger and can’t be ignored for long…”
Put your money where your mouth is when Riverdale’s next and best jumping-on point arrives in ARCHIE #5 this January—featuring swell covers by Eisner Award winner Leonardo Romero (Birds of Prey, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man), interior artist Nick Cagnetti (Spirit of the Shadows, Pink Lemonade) Eisner Award nominee Kano (Sabrina The Teenage Witch), and legendary Archie Comics artist Dan Parent (Life with Kevin).
