Something is Killing the Children Returns, and it’s as sharp, juicy, and thrilling as ever. We’re back in Erica’s past as a young hunter, where we get to witness the hunts and obstacles she faced in the early days of her career. Among these challenges is Cecilia, who becomes yet another thorn in Erica’s side.
The issue kicks into gear with a scene set at a funeral following a monster attack, which is very on brand for the series. We find Erica in attendance, but a younger Erica. We come to learn that she is shadowing the only adult black mask in the House of Slaughter, learning on the job. However, in true Erica fashion, she defies the house’s rules (in secret, of course), which is true to form, but one of the highlights of this scene is her interaction with a young child who survived the attack. Erica’s delivery and tone throughout this scene are striking and brutal; her younger self still possesses a sharp edge in how she communicates. After all, she is less seasoned, less experienced, and, crucially, less traumatised, which is reflected in the way she speaks to people. It’s refreshing to see this side of Erica and to compare it with the version of her we know today, who, while still sharp, has become much softer and more understanding.
Throughout this entire series, we’ve seamlessly transitioned between past and present storylines, enriching both character development and the lore of the world. This approach has allowed us to witness not only Erica’s growth but also the evolution of the House of Slaughter and its supporting characters. Issue #41 is no exception; it expertly sets up another thrilling storyline while intricately weaving in details that advance the plot, even as we revisit the past. This backward glance doesn’t detract from the momentum of the main narrative; instead, it’s a masterful balancing act that enhances the overall experience. As the issue unfolds, the story begins to take shape, giving us a glimpse of where we are headed, and it sounds like we are in for a great time.

It’s great to see Something is Killing the Children back in action and on the shelves once again. Issue #41 is yet another testament to how excellent this series is, as it’s filled with compelling characters, engaging storylines, and intriguing mysteries.
