Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have had another record breaking weekend at the global box office. After only two weeks in cinemas, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has climbed to an incredible $1.67 billion world-wide. With plenty of room left to rule the box office it seems almost certain the film will reach a landmark $2 billion before moving into the home video market.

Having now expanded into IMAX screens, the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed fourth Spider-Man to star Tom Holland took an estimated $145M in the US, the fifth Marvel title to gross over $100M in its second weekend after Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther and The Avengers. That figure is also the third highest second frame ever at the domestic B.O. It’s total gross in the US currently sits at $655M.

Watch our podcast episode diving deep into our spoiler review of the film in the player below:

Brand New Day was once again the clear winner for the weekend, taking more than the rest of the top 5 films combined:

    1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Sony) 4,487 theaters Fri $43M (-75% from last Friday) Sat $57M Sun $44.5M, 3-day $145M (-60%), Total $655M/Wk 2
    2. The Odyssey (Uni)  3,603 (-258) theaters Fri $8.8M (-38% ) Sat $12.4M Sun $10.2M 3-day $31.5M (-38%), Total $461.1M/Wk 4
    3. One Night Only (Uni) 3,012 theaters, Fri $2.8M, Sat $1.59M Sun $1.3M 3-day $5.7M/Wk 1
    4. Super Troopers 3 (Sea), 2,760 theaters, Fri $1.7M, Sat $1.35M Sun $1.1M 3-day $4M/Wk 1
    5. Toy Story 5 (Dis) 2,660 (-375) theaters, Fri $1.1M (-38%) Sat $1.65M Sun $1.1M 3-day $3.9M (-41%), Total $470.3M/Wk 8

Internationally the second weekend saw Brand New Day bringing in a further $236M, a 48% easing off from its opening. The weekend was once again led by China with $29.1M for a cume of $186.7M. The film became India’s biggest Hollywood release ever with a $10.6M weekend taking its total in the region to $52.8M. Whilst Brazil delivered the best hold among top 10 markets for the weekend, -33% for $13.4M and a $46.3M cume. The film’s overseas total now sits at $1.01B.

In our four star review of the film Neil says “Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the most grounded, mature, and well-acted entry the franchise has ever produced, anchored by the best performance of Tom Holland’s career. Its script is often distracted by too many moving parts, but when it focuses on Peter’s isolation, this is Spider-Man finally allowed to grow up.”

It’s a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves – a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day was written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Trammel Tillman, Micheal Mando and Mark Ruffalo.
