SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Opens to Incredible $927M Worldwide

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have a lot to celebrate this morning as Spider-Man: Brand New Day celebrates an incredible opening weekend at the global box office. After beginning its global rollout mid-week last week it’s been reported that the film has opened to an estimated $927M worldwide.

We will get the final numbers later today or early tomorrow, but for now it certainly seems that Tom Holland’s latest outing as Peter Parker is proving a major challenge to Avengers: Endgame’s crown as the highest grossing movie in the MCU. That film opened to $1.22 billion in 2019 before going on to gross a little under $2.8 billion.

Brand New Day opened with $72M in previews in the US, stealing the record for the all-time preview gross from Endgame which grossed $64M when it previewed. That $64M led the Destin Daniel Cretton directed film to a huge $169.3M Friday in its home market. Saturday is currently reported at $101.5M with Sunday coming in at $84.2M for a full weekend of $355M. By comparison, the last Spider-Man film, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home opened to a then record for the franchise with $260.1M.

Brand New Day was also the clear winner for the weekend, taking more than the rest of the top 5 films combined:

    1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Sony) 4,487 theaters, Fri $168M, Sat $101.5M Sun $84.2M 3-day $355M/Wk 1
    2. The Odyssey (Uni)  3,861 (-81) Fri $14.3M Sat $19.66M Sun $17M 3-day $51M (-43%), Total $395.5M/Wk 3
    3. Toy Story 5 (Dis) 3,035 (-340) theaters, Fri $1.8M Sat $2.6M Sun $1.9M 3-day $6.3M (-38%), Total $461.69M/Wk 7
    4. Minions & Monsters (Uni) 3,203 (-363) theaters, Fri $1.69M Sat $2.3M Sun $1.8M , 3-day $5.8M (-41%), total $168.3M/Wk 5
    5. Moana (Dis) 3,010 (-1005) theaters, Fri $1.6M Sat $2.1M Sun $1.6M 3-day$5.3M (-50%), Total $114.7M/Wk 4

Going into the weekend Sony was predicting $425M and there’s a real chance that when all the receipts are counted that it may have made $1 billion. As reported by Deadline, Brand New Day broke records as the best ever for the Spider-Man franchise, as well as records for Zendaya, Daniel Destin Cretton, and for Sony studios.

The film set all-time opening records across the globe in likes-for-likes, including France ($26.6M), India ($31.8M) where it was #1 for Hollywood picture and the 6th biggest opening in the history of India, Brazil ($23.8M), Spain ($15.6M), Peru ($8.6M), Colombia ($6.8M), the United Arab Emirates ($6.8M), Saudi Arabia ($5.4M), Chile ($5.0M), Turkey ($4.7M), Ecuador ($4.1M) and Belgium ($4.0M).

China led all international markets with $121.0M, the biggest ever for a Marvel post-Covid; in contrast, No Way Home didn’t release in China. Here in the UK the film launched with $49.0M (#3 all-time). Other notable markets include Mexico ($38.3M, #2 all-time). South Korea ($25.0M), Australia ($21.4M, #2 all-time passing No Way Home and Force Awakens and behind Endgame there), Germany ($20.0M), Italy ($18.2M), Argentina ($10.5M), Japan ($10.0M), the Philippines ($9.3M, #3 all-time, a great comeback number for the territory for an MPA title post Covid) and the Netherlands ($4.7M, #3 all-time).

In our four star review of the film Neil says “Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the most grounded, mature, and well-acted entry the franchise has ever produced, anchored by the best performance of Tom Holland’s career. Its script is often distracted by too many moving parts, but when it focuses on Peter’s isolation, this is Spider-Man finally allowed to grow up.”

It’s a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves – a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day was written by Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers. The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Trammel Tillman, Micheal Mando and Mark Ruffalo.
