Alright, so for those of us who are Marvel-whipped enough to stick around through the end credits of X-Men ’97 Season 2, Episode 4, Rise of Apocalypse Part II, we were treated to a genuinely exciting post-credits scene.
Honestly, it feels like it’s been a minute since we’ve had a really solid Marvel post-credits stinger, right? It was a welcome surprise and instantly reminded me of an era when staying through the credits actually meant something. Back then, post-credit scenes weren’t just teases—they were unmissable events. X-Men ’97 continues to tap into that nostalgia of its audience and deliver, and I absolutely love it.
So, let’s break down exactly what happens, what it could mean, and the huge possibilities it’s setting up.
Warning: Heavy spoilers for X-Men ’97 Season 2, Episode 4 ahead.
The Post-Credit Scene Explained
The post-credits scene opens with Wolverine standing on a rooftop in Paris, overlooking the city’s skyline. He’s sporting an all-black outfit complete with a beanie – a look that’s surprisingly understated for Logan. Would love to see it in Marvel Rivals, just saying.
He’s soon joined by Captain America and Black Widow, with Natasha carrying a mysterious briefcase.
Captain America greets Logan by saying, “The Stars and Stripes still hold some weight, even in these times.”
It’s an interesting line because it suggests that Steve Rogers’ influence isn’t quite what it once was. Whether that’s because of the timeline, the state of the world, or simply how much has changed remains unclear.
Cap then says, “It’s nice to see you again, Logan. It’s been a long time.”
Logan simply replies: “Fifty years.”
That’s…a long time, and a lot to unpack.
The timeline this season has become incredibly difficult to pin down, which makes it all the more enjoyable. Between characters travelling through the past, present and future, X-Men ’97 is jumping left, right, backwards and forwards, making it almost impossible to know exactly when this scene takes place, which means fans like us are spitting out theories and joining online chatter, which makes it all the more fun.g
The Weapon X Reveal
The biggest reveal comes when Black Widow opens the briefcase. Inside is a file labelled: Weapon X.
Natasha explains that the Weapon X project was intentionally buried for a long, long, time, immediately raising a mountain of questions. Who buried it? Why did they bury it? What are they hiding? Who are they hiding it from?
Fans of both the comics and Fox’s live-action X-Men films will instantly recognise Weapon X as the infamous program responsible for bonding adamantium to Wolverine’s skeleton. It’s one of the most important parts of Logan’s history as a character (besides being a short king), yet X-Men ’97 seems to be teasing that there’s still far more to uncover.
The fact that the files were deliberately hidden suggests there are secrets even we, as the audience, haven’t seen yet.
“I’m Getting the Band Back Together”
The scene ends with Logan delivering one simple line: “I’m getting the band back together.” It’s a fantastic way to end the episode because it immediately raises one massive question: Which band?
Is he talking about the X-Men? Could this be the beginning of X-Force? Or is he assembling an entirely different team?
Considering there are now multiple timelines, multiple groups of heroes, and characters scattered throughout history, the possibilities are almost endless. Almost everyone is on the board at this point, so the possibilties here are endless.
Our Theories
We’re finally getting Wolverine’s true Weapon X story
This feels like the beginning of a much deeper exploration of Wolverine’s past. Rather than simply retelling his origin, X-Men ’97 could be expanding the Weapon X mythology and revealing secrets that even longtime fans don’t know.
Paris could be setting up Fantomex
The Paris setting feels far too specific to ignore.
In Marvel Comics, Fantomex is a French mutant and super-soldier created through the Weapon Plus Program as Weapon XIII. Since Weapon X is now back in the spotlight, introducing Fantomex would be a clever way to expand the wider Weapon Plus mythology.
Wolverine could finally be getting his adamantium back
Depending on where this story is heading, the Weapon X files could be laying the groundwork for Wolverine reclaiming his adamantium skeleton. It’s a storyline fans have wanted to see adapted properly for years.
Is this the beginning of the Avengers?
Captain America and Black Widow showing up together can’t be a coincidence.
Their appearance could be teasing this timeline’s version of the Avengers, or at the very least hinting at a much larger crossover between Marvel’s heroes. If that’s the direction X-Men ’97 is heading, the scope of this series is about to become even bigger than we imagined.
Whatever Marvel has planned, one thing is clear: X-Men ’97 just delivered one of its best post-credits scenes yet. It asks more questions than it answers, but that’s exactly what a great stinger should do—and now the wait for Episode 5 somehow feels even longer.
