5 Marvel Rivals Characters That Need Reworks (And How NetEase Could Fix Them)

Marvel Rivals has done a fantastic job bringing iconic Marvel heroes and villains to life, but not every character has landed perfectly. Some heroes are underpowered. Others are mechanically fine but don’t fully capture the fantasy of the character they’re meant to represent. A few just feel like their kits need modernisation compared to newer additions to the roster. Whether it’s awkward gameplay loops, missing comic-accurate abilities, or underwhelming ultimates, these are the five Marvel Rivals characters that feel like they need reworks the most.

The Marvel Rivals community has been getting louder about the changes and updates they’d love to see in future seasons, so we thought we’d add our own thoughts into the mix. Before we get into it, we want to make it clear that we’re big Marvel Rivals fans. This article is meant in the spirit of fun speculation, a “what we’d love to see” take on the game, rather than a criticism of the current roster or balance. We’re huge fans of the game, and can’t wait to see where it goes next.

    1. Black Widow

Black Widow is the biggest priority on this list. She just feels too limited for a character with her skill set.

Right now, she mostly revolves around basic ranged combat and positioning. The problem is that once enemies close the gap, she doesn’t have enough tools to respond in a meaningful way.

    How I’d Rework Black Widow

    • Add a Widow’s Bite stun to create opening windows for precision shots
    • Give her dual pistols as an alternate weapon mode, similar to Punisher-style swapping
    • Allow weapon switching between sniper precision and close-range combat
    • Reinforce her identity as both a spy assassin and a flexible fighter

    2. Jean Grey

Jean Grey is one of the most powerful mutants in Marvel lore, but her in-game kit doesn’t fully reflect that.

A lot of her gameplay feels closer to Hela than Jean Grey, and she barely uses her iconic telekinesis in meaningful ways. Her ultimate also lacks the impact you’d expect from a character of her scale.

    How I’d Rework Jean Grey

    • Add a telekinetic projectile deflection ability
    • Allow her to freeze incoming attacks mid-air and redirect them
    • Rework her ultimate into a mid-air suspension CC ability
    • Instead of slamming enemies down, she could hold enemies suspended for team follow-ups
    • Emphasise her fantasy as a telekinetic controller, not just a damage caster

    3. Storm

Storm is in a solid place overall, but one part of her kit feels almost unnecessary.

Her speed boost rarely feels impactful, and many players ignore it entirely — which is usually a sign an ability isn’t pulling its weight.

    How I’d Rework Storm

    • Replace her speed boost with a wind-based control ability
    • Add a wind burst knockback when enemies get too close
    • Introduce a charged lightning strike mechanic
    • Charged lightning could chain between multiple enemies
    • Lean more heavily into her identity as a true weather manipulator
    • A quicker entrance to her ult.

    4. Ultron

Ultron feels like a character caught between two identities.

As a Strategist, his healing output can feel underwhelming compared to stronger support picks. But more importantly, his kit doesn’t fully capture what makes Ultron interesting in the first place — endless drones and machine domination.

    How I’d Rework Ultron

    • Increase emphasis on drone-based gameplay and summons
    • Add more autonomous robotic support units
    • Expand his ability to control the battlefield with drones
    • Alternatively, shift him into a Duelist role focused on damage and swarming enemies
    • Better reflect Ultron as a machine intelligence overwhelming opponents

    5. Human Torch

Human Torch launched with a lot of hype, but his long-term impact has dipped compared to other Duelists.

The biggest issue is his lack of consistency between aerial mobility and actual damage output. He flies, but doesn’t always feel rewarded for staying airborne.

    How I’d Rework Human Torch

    • Add an alternate fire mode for ranged aerial combat
    • Introduce a focused flame beam or firebolt option
    • Improve synergy between flight and damage output
    • Reward staying airborne instead of forcing close-range dives
    • Strengthen his identity as a true aerial damage dealer

Which Marvel Rivals Character Needs a Rework Most?

Marvel Rivals is constantly evolving through balance updates, hero adjustments, and ongoing patch notes, which means many of these characters could eventually receive reworks in future seasons.

For me, Jean Grey stands out as the biggest missed opportunity,  not because she’s weak, but because her current kit doesn’t fully reflect her power level, identity, or iconic telekinetic abilities. That said, Black Widow, Storm, Ultron, and Human Torch all have clear areas where their gameplay could be improved to better match their Marvel fantasy and make them feel more rewarding to play.

As the Marvel Rivals roster continues to grow, character identity is becoming just as important as balance. These five heroes are perfect examples of that ongoing tension between gameplay design and comic-book accuracy.

All that said, the game is still one of the best in the market, and the Dev team do such a wonderful job at listening to fans.

So what do you think? Which Marvel Rivals characters do you enjoy the most, and which ones do you think need a rework the most? Drop a comment and let us know — we’d love to hear your thoughts.
