Breaking Down MARVEL RIVALS Season 9: Gameplay Upgrades, Jubilee, Black Widow & More

Marvel Rivals Season 9 arrives on Friday, July 10, and it’s shaping up to be one of the game’s most ambitious updates since launch. While every new season brings fresh content–new characters, new maps, skins, proficiency updates, etc.– this update goes far beyond a new hero or a handful of balance tweaks. Instead, NetEase is introducing sweeping gameplay changes that could redefine how every match is played.

Headlining the update is the arrival of Jubilee, who joins the ever-growing roster as a Strategist. Armed with dazzling mutant powers and a support-focused toolkit, Jubilee is expected to offer players another exciting option in the game’s healing and utility role.

We knew Season 9 was going to be a big one when Marvel Rivals announced a dedicated developer livestream, something the team rarely does. Clocking in at an hour and a half (ish), the presentation was packed with reveals, deep dives, and gameplay changes. But as exciting as Jubilee is, she is arguably not the biggest story of the season.

Team-Up Abilities Get Their Biggest Evolution Yet

One of Marvel Rivals’ defining features has always been its Team-Up Ability system. Unlike traditional hero shooters, Marvel Rivals rewards players for pairing specific heroes together, unlocking unique attacks, passive bonuses, or enhanced abilities that simply are not available otherwise.

The system has become one of the game’s most beloved mechanics. It encourages players to experiment with different team compositions while celebrating the relationships and rivalries that make Marvel’s universe so iconic.

Season 9 takes that philosophy to a whole new level. Rather than introducing just a handful of additional Team-Ups, NetEase has expanded and evolved the entire system. Almost every hero on the roster is affected in some way, whether through brand-new Team-Up abilities, upgraded existing moves, or fresh interactions with other characters.

The result is a dramatic shake-up that is likely to force players to rethink their favourite team compositions from the ground up (and I am all for it).

New Team-Ups, Upgraded Abilities, and Fresh Strategies

The biggest challenge with Season 9 is not understanding one or two new mechanics. It is keeping track of just how much has changed.

Some heroes receive completely new Team-Up abilities that open up entirely different playstyles. Others see their existing Team-Up moves upgraded, making already powerful combinations even stronger. There are also brand-new partnerships that players have never been able to experiment with before, creating strategies that simply were not possible in previous seasons.

For competitive players, these additions could have a huge impact on the game’s meta. Established team compositions may no longer be the strongest choices, while overlooked heroes could suddenly become must-picks thanks to powerful new synergies.

Even casual players are likely to notice the difference, with more opportunities than ever to discover fun combinations alongside friends.

Black Widow Finally Gets the Rework She Deserves

Perhaps the biggest surprise outside of the Team-Up overhaul is Black Widow’s long-awaited rework (I am jumping and screaming…thank god). For months, players have called, begged and pleaded for changes to the character, and it looks like the Marvel Rivals team has finally listened.

The rework completely changes her combat loop. Her sniper rifle is no longer her primary weapon, with Black Widow instead relying on a much faster, harder-hitting firearm during standard combat. Her Ultimate Ability now transforms her into a deadly sniper, allowing her to pick off enemies from long range, while her previous ultimate has been reworked into a standard ability.

It is a significant redesign that makes her gameplay feel more fluid and gives her a much clearer identity within the roster.

From what we’ve seen so far, she looks fantastic. Personally, I would have loved to see her wield dual pistols as her primary weapon before switching to her sniper rifle during her ultimate. It would have been a nice way to bridge her comic book roots with the MCU version of the character. That said, this is still a massive improvement over her current kit, and I cannot wait to try her out.

More Than Just a New Character

While Jubilee will undoubtedly attract plenty of attention during the opening days of the season, Season 9 feels less like a traditional content update and more like a gameplay refresh for the entire roster.

Instead of asking players to simply learn one new hero, the update encourages everyone to revisit characters they have already mastered and explore how they interact with teammates in completely new ways.

It is the kind of update that rewards experimentation, whether you are testing fresh combinations in Quick Play or looking for the next dominant strategy in Competitive.

A New Era for Marvel Rivals?

Season 9 could prove to be a defining moment for Marvel Rivals.

The expanded Team-Up system builds on one of the game’s strongest ideas while giving every hero fresh opportunities to shine. Combined with the arrival of Jubilee, Black Widow’s long-awaited rework, and a wealth of new abilities across the roster, this update has the potential to significantly reshape both the casual and competitive experience.

Of course, it will take time for players to uncover the strongest combinations and discover which heroes benefit the most from the overhaul. But one thing is already clear. When Season 9 launches on July 10, Marvel Rivals will not just have a new hero. It will feel like an entirely new game.

That’s our breakdown of the new season update. We are excited to dive headfirst into the game and see how these changes feel (I am personally super excited for Sue Storm and The Scarlet Witch)
