    Synopsis

In this penultimate chapter of the Prime Power Rangers’ adventures, our heroes must fight for their lives against a dangerous new villain who miiiiiiight just be a familiar face to fans of the Zeo Rangers…

As tensions rise and family bonds reach a breaking point, the Prime Rangers are tested as never before. Will they find courage in the face of a galactic threat to fight for each other and their home?

    Review

Be careful what you wish for Power Rangers fans… as Melissa Flores’ brilliant Power Rangers Prime hurtles towards a premature conclusion, the series is proving that fulfilling the Rangers’ dreams might not be all its cracked up to be. As an Earth-shattering conflict looms very heavily, Flores and team are doubling down on their investigation of what is really means to be a Power Ranger.

11 years ago, following a stand-off with the Eltarians, Lauren is belittled by her brother Jayden for not morphing and standing up for her family. Whilst in the present day, after spending literally the entire series to-date searching for her father and brother, they’re reunited but the moment doesn’t quite like up to expectation. Meanwhile in the desert, Orion and Rita are confronted by a Power Rangers Zeo throwback as Trey of Triforia turns up fully decked out at the Gold Zeo Ranger. Having been summoned by Rita, Trey in his separated form is looking to conjure a Ravager vessel capable of wiping humans – and Eltarians – off the face of the Earth.

In happier news Mark and Jun are FINALLY reunited this month, albeit through desperate circumstances. But finally Power Rangers Prime is making good on the romance that fans have been waiting for. It just so happens that it’s unfolding at the same time as global chaos. Now is certainly the time that Earth could use a group of beautifully colour-coded superheroes…

The fact the entire universe isn’t bowing to Flores as the master of Power Rangers writing is quite frankly unacceptable. The writing of this series continues to be incredible month-after-month. In the space of just these 22 pages there’s the classic franchise trope of the Evil Ranger, something which dates back all the way to Mighty Morphin and the introduction of Tommy. It’s also not hard to see the teamwork metaphor working overtime even though the group is currently splintered into pairs. In each branch of the story Flores illustrates how working together, even when they’re at each other’s throats, is working for the greater good. On top of that and with the end of the series looming there’s still a huge blockbuster story unravelling and challenging the Rangers in dramatic – and somewhat apocalyptic – fashion.

Power Rangers Prime #15 is inescapably busy for all the reasons listed above. But it’s never over-complicated and never becomes off-putting to read. Instead this huge melting pot of story elements and plot lines are continuing to converge at a most alarming rate and it’s nothing short of enthralling to read. All the way through I have that sense of nervous energy that I get watching the penultimate episode of a season of Buffy or a-n-other favourite series. The pacing is exquisite and only serves to add more tension to what already appears to be a pretty bleak situation for our Rangers.

Throw in Federico Sorressa’s incredibly energetic artwork and you’ve got a book you won’t be able to put down. There’s a startling sense of forward momentum in Sorressa’s artwork which keeps things moving even in the rare quiet moments. Action scenes are visceral. But even the posturing of the Triforians is somehow bathed in electricity. It’s like the artwork is crackling with energy, bursting to life from the page. Assisted by Joana LaFuente’s colours which are a staple of Power Rangers Prime’s success.

Whilst I absolutely do not want to see this series come to an end. There’s something undeniably exciting about seeing it reach this point. I’m sure the Rangers will save the day in the end, they have to its tradition. But right now Melissa Flores has me hooked and I’m not convinced everyone is going to make it out okay…

    Verdict

Power Rangers Prime #15 delights with yet another magnetic issue. Between Melissa Flores’ defiantly bold writing and the dynamic visual duo of Federico Sorressa and Joana Lafuente this book has everything going for it heading into what is sure to be a blockbuster finale.
