Sad news for Power Rangers fans this morning. Whilst the franchise continues to flourish in comic books, the latest attempt to bring the series back into live-action at Disney+ has now officially ground to a halt.
As revealed exclusively by Deadline, the planned series from Percy Jackson and the Olympians executive producers Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz is no longer happening. According to the trade the series hasn’t been shelved due to creative differences, instead it’s more economic issues which have put pay to it ever coming to the screen.
According to Deadline’s sources, the high-end cost of producing a credible superhero series like Power Rangers requires a major investment. Unfortunately with the franchise currently under the ownership of Hasbro, the economics of Disney+ shelling out the required budget are just not favourable. This is the second time Hasbro has come close and fallen foul of economic issues, a similar series was based at Netflix several years ago.
There’s currently no word from Hasbro or the show runners as to whether they may try and shop the project elsewhere or whether it’s back to square one. We’ll keep you posted.
