Late last night we heard the news that the third teaser for Avengers: Doomsday had now been sent to cinemas across the globe. With that the clock started on just when a description (or video) of Marvel Studios’ latest trailer would arrive online and now… here it is…
For weeks we’ve been hearing that the third teaser for Doomsday would focus on the returning 20th Century Studios X-Men characters. Now that rumour has been confirmed. The teaser reportedly opens on the empty halls of Xavier’s School for the Gifted as an ominous voice over from Ian McKellen’s Magneto signals catastrophe has befallen the mutant population. We get brief glimpses of the empty school as well as an ongoing chess match between Magneto and his closest ally.
“Death comes for us all, it’s all I know for sure. The question isn’t: are you prepared to die? The question is: who will you be when you close your eyes?”
As the narration comes to an end we see the wheels of Charles Xavier’s chair as the camera pulls back to reveal both Patrick Stewart and McKellen sharing the scene together. In the moment Patrick Stewart is scene wearing Charles’ legendary, comic-accurate, X-Men flight suit.
The final shot of the trailer cuts to James Marsden’s Cyclops, also wearing a fully comic accurate costume. He rips off his visor, surrounded already by fire and chaos, before screaming as an uncontrollable beam of energy bursts from his eyes.
Cut to: “The X-Men will return in Avengers: Doomsday”.
It certainly seems the mutants of the original X-Men movie franchise have not had the easiest time when we meet them in the MCU. From set photos we know that Sentinels will play a part in the Doomsday storyline. Perhaps this version of the OG cast come from a world where mutant-kind has been almost wiped out by the Sentinels, something similar to the future glimpsed in the brilliant X-Men: Days of Future Past flash-forward sequences?
