The new 4K restoration was directly overseen by Studio Ghibli’s own Atsushi Okui, director of digital imaging, who has been involved in nearly every major Studio Ghibli project since he first started at the studio in 1993. The scan has been a decade-long process and its restoration faithfully presents the film as its creative team intended.
The hand-drawn, animated feature is an original story written and directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, produced by Toshio Suzuki, and features a musical score from Miyazaki’s long-time collaborator, the renowned composer Joe Hisaishi.
Elysian is proud to bring these timeless classics back to the big screen for families and fans, having amassed numerous awards with THE BOY AND THE HERON, and the crowning success of it in the box office, with it becoming the highest-grossing Studio Ghibli release in UK, going on to soar in the UK Home Entertainment chart. They have also had a string of recent popular re-releases with MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO in summer and SPIRITED AWAY in Christmas 2024. It continues Elysian’s commitment to celebrating Studio Ghibli’s extraordinary legacy.
The 4K Restoration of Princess Mononoke will be released only in UK and Irish cinemas from October 17th, 2025
