Award season is upon us, and the anime industry have just joined the final list of nominees for the Best Motion Picture – Animated category with two films. The 81st Golden Globe Awards, which is set to air on January 7th, 2024, will see Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume and Hayo Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron compete against some of the other animated giants that rocked this year.
Suzume and The Boy and the Heron were nominated alongside Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Wish, and Elemental. Joe Hisaishi was also nominated for Best Original Score – Motion Picture for his soundtrack on Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron.
It’s definitely a tough choice this year. If we had to pick one, it would definitely be between The Boy and the Heron and Across the Spider-Verse. Although, it would be amazing to see Suzume walk home with a Golden Globe. Can’t they all share instead?
Just as a reminder, Suzume is available to watch exclusively on Crunchyroll now. You can check out James’ raving 5-star review right here. For those Studio Ghibli fans, you’ll have to wait until Boxing Day, Tuesday 26th December, to watch Miyazaki’s latest triumph in UK cinemas.
