The King of the Monsters will return… Somehow? As we saw in the hugely successful Godzilla Minus One, Godzilla was somehow able to survive the clever assault launched by the small band of heroes. Well, we say “survive”. Godzilla was basically blown up, but chunks of his body began to morph and take shape, as though he was regenerating completely. However, that wasn’t the most interesting part of Godzilla’s presence. Shikishima discovers that Noriko survived, but all is not what it seems. A small black mark can be seen moving on her skin, which seems to suggest some sort of plague or infection attached to Godzilla. What does it mean? Well, we don’t really know. But Godzilla fans received an exciting update about Godzilla’s future and we may get the answers we seek sooner rather than later.
Recently, Toho, the Japanese company that birthed and propelled Godzilla into popular culture, has confirmed that a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One will be the next step for the franchise in a bid to expand the brand globally. Previously, it was announced that director Takashi Yamazaki would helm a new Godzilla project. At that time there was no confirmation as to whether it would be a brand new story for the Kaiju, or a continuation. Many were probably expecting a similiar situation to Shin Godzilla where a sequel was definitely possible, but it just never happened. Well, the good news is that the screenplay for a sequel is underway, along with storyboard work being developed as we speak.
Aditionally, Toho are looking to invest 15 billion yen into Godzilla, branching off into video games, merchandise, and other attractions. So, not only will we be getting a 34th Toho Godzilla movie in the future, we may also be getting more Godzilla in general, which is great news for us.
So, what will happen in Godzilla’s next adventure? Will he get his revenge, or will a new threat appear to challenge the King? Hopefully, we’ll get some more details soon, but for now all we can do is speculate. While we wait, don’t forget to check out all of the latest Godzilla news right here.
