    You Don’t Need to Know My Hero Academia to Enjoy Vigilantes, But It Helps!

    The world of My Hero Academia is rich and expansive, and for fans craving more of what that world has to offer, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes offers an exciting spin-off. But a common question pops up… Do you need to be a My Hero expert to dive in to this brand new show?

    The short answer is no, and here I will explain why. But first, check out the official trailer for Vigilantes in the player below:

    Vigilantes tells its own self-contained story, operating in the same world as the main series. We follow Koichi (aka The Crawler) and his friends as they patrol the streets as unlicensed heroes, dealing with problems that often fly under the radar of the official hero system.

    The series introduces a fresh cast of characters with their own unique quirks, motivations, and challenges. The series stays away from U.A. or Hero Training and, for the most part, even the world of licensed Heroes. While set in the same world, Vigilantes has its own distinct plotlines and conflicts which develop across the 15 volumes and however many seasons the anime will eventually get. These stories are designed to be engaging and satisfying even if you’re unfamiliar with the events of the main series, and for those already familiar with the world, open the door to the deeper areas of this world. The spin-off does a good job of introducing the core concepts of the My Hero Academia universe, like quirks, heroes, villains, and the societal context, so that newcomers won’t feel lost.

    However, there’s no denying that familiarity with the franchise can enhance your experience with Vigilantes. Here’s how:

    We encounter familiar faces from the main series, like Eraserhead, Fat Gum, and even a few villains, which can be exciting for existing fans. Knowing their backstories and relationships adds another layer of depth to these appearances.

    Having a broader understanding of this hero society and its history allows you to appreciate the nuances of the Vigilantes story. You’ll grasp the significance of certain events and character choices more fully.

    We’re shown the public and ground-level reactions to this world, how people with mutated quirks struggle in society, and how some are vilified simply for their appearance. While these are topics the mainline story has covered, Vigilantes goes into more detail without some world-ending threat looming over them.

    The story often includes subtle nods and references to the main series as well, showing the spark that will ultimately light the fuse witnessed in the mainline story, which can be a fun treat for dedicated fans.

    Ultimately, the beauty of My Hero Academia and its spin-off is that they cater to different levels of engagement. You can enjoy Vigilantes as a standalone entry, appreciating its unique story and characters. But if you’re willing to invest in the main series, you’ll gain a richer, more comprehensive understanding of this fascinating world.

    Whether you choose to experience them separately or together, both My Hero Academia and Vigilantes offer compelling narratives and exciting superhero action!
