Lionsgate has used its presentation tonight at CinemaCon to confirm it has tapped martial arts legend Donnie Yen to return to the John Wick franchise. Yen is set to star in and direct a brand new spin-off featuring his blind assassin from John Wick: Chapter 4, Caine.
Production is due to begin later this year with the film being described as an English-language, Hong Kong-style action thriller. Mattson Tomlin, writer of the upcoming adaptation of the Keanu Reeves-created comic book BRZRKR, is set to pen the film. A previous draft of the screenplay of the film was written by Robert Askins.
The film will be produced by franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee (John Wick: Chapters 1 through 4, Ballerina, Monkey Man) through their Thunder Road shingle, and by Chad Stahelski (John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum, Day Shift, John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina), who produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment production banner. Yen will also serve as an executive producer.
